Origin and Objectives

The Benenden Amenity & Countryside Society was set up by Jonathon Strong and others in 1989. The current Chairman is Alan Milne (alanmilne@chartsec.co.uk).

The Society has two principal objectives, namely:
  1. To encourage amenity and countryside activities and interest in order to promote a fuller appreciation of the geography, history, natural history and environment of the Parish and the Weald of Kent.
  2. To resist any proposals (ie, planning applications) which would adversely affect the environment and amenities of the Parish

Dick Hill is the Treasurer (dandmhill@lineone.net) and David Grief is Membership Secretary (david@grief.co.uk)

Social Activities

Our main social activities are spring and autumn walks, which typically attract around 30 to 40 people and are followed by a large tea (which participants are invited to contribute to!). The Annual General Meeting in February is a social activity as it is combined with a talk on a topical subject relevant to the Society's objectives.

Cheese and wine are usually served at the AGM as an added inducement to encourage members to attend.

Planning Matters

We monitor planning applications submitted to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. A small subcommittee looks in more detail at plans which we think may may "adversely affect the environment and amenities of the parish" (objective 2 above) and decides whether to object. Only a handful of objections have been made each year; these have related mostly to telephone masts, new houses in inappropriate localities and applications which entail a significant increase in traffic.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are collected on a calendar year basis and are kept at a very modest level:- Family £5.00 and Single £2.00.
